28 Self-Love Strategies Which Will Help You Feel Good

I find myself getting increasingly busy these days. I don’t find any time for myself anymore.

Do you find yourself saying this to yourself?

There is the constant dilemma of balancing work, family responsibilities and chores whilst also maintaining time for yourself. Often you will find yourself putting yourself last.

But all is not lost…

There are a few strategies that you can implement straight away in your life which will help you to appreciate yourself more. These strategies are also designed for fun and enjoyment which we often lack when suffering with a mental illness.

Self-love is important as it is a way of giving back to yourself, instead of taking away from your-self. So here we go:

  • 1: Journaling your thoughts –

Writing down your thoughts get them out of your head and onto paper. Often with a mental illness (especially anxiety) we live in our heads. Journaling gets us out of head and to focus on the present. It is also a great tool for reflection.

  • 2: Working out at the gym –

Any form of exercise generates endorphins which are feel good chemicals, making you feel instantly better. Mix it up by using different exercise equipment such as elliptical, bike and treadmill. Make sure you get in some weights to build muscle.

  • 3: Going for a swim –

Going for a swim is therapeutic. You will feel naturally more relaxed after a swim. Not only will you feel more relaxed, but you will be getting a great workout. Break up the workout by doing a mixture of freestyle, breast stroke, back stroke and walking up and down the pool.

  • 4: Meditation –

  • 5: Sitting in nature –

You can connect with the surroundings, animals and plant life. It is proven to reduce blood pressure and cortisol levels.

  • 6: Visiting the park and playing with your kids –

Going to the park with your kids is a great way of de-stressing and relaxation. No one wants to be at home all the time, so getting out of the house with your kids is a great idea.

  • 7: Taking a warm bubble bath –

If you are like me, you probably can’t remember the last time you went to a restaurant. Try out a new restaurant or cuisine. You may like Chinese, Thai, Mexican or even Italian food. Go and try something new.

  • 11: Going to an amusement park –

This is a great one if you want to have fun.

  • 12: Go out to the movies –

You may want to watch the latest blockbuster that has been released and this is a great way to show self-love.

  • 13: Read a book at the park –

Like it has been mentioned elsewhere connecting with nature is a good strategy to de-stress, so take your favorite book to the park and read some.

  • 14: Lie on a beach and listen to the waves –

The ocean and the sea is a very calming place to visit. The sound of the waves and the quiet stillness is what I enjoy about the beach. If you need some healing, then head to a beach.

  • 15: Drive to a new destination –

Being in the same area all the time can get really depressing, all you want to do is escape and go somewhere different. So, drive to a new destination, whether it may be another suburb or another town or city.

  • 16: Go bowling –

Bowling is a fun day out for the family.

  • 17: Go to a sporting event/game –

Going to a sporting event is good way to get away from the house for a few hours and do something different.

  • 18: Go fishing –

Fishing is fun activity for people of all ages.

  • 19: Get your favorite take out –

I don’t know about you but eating brings me a lot of joy. There is a warm fuzzy feeling that comes from eating your favorite foods.

  • 20: Visit family –

Spending time with people who care about you is important to building self-esteem and confidence. It is also a great way to unwind after a stressful day.

  • 21: Taking a local vacation to somewhere new –

Vacations are great way to de-stress and step away from your life for some time.

  • 22: Playing cards with someone –

Playing cards with someone is fun activity but also is a great bonding experience.

  • 23: Go for a long walk –

Physical exercise helps release feel-good chemicals and going for a long walk will help to do this.

  • 24: Get a massage –

Massage is proven to be good for stress and anxiety. It lowers blood pressure, and the stress hormone cortisol. It also increases serotonin and oxytocin levels.

  • 25: Get a manicure/pedicure –

A manicure or pedicure is a great self-care strategy. It is extremely therapeutic and relaxing.

  • 26: Do a random act of kindness for someone –

The very act of doing something kind for someone helps us to feel good about ourselves. Being compassionate is great skill to have.

  • 27: Try cooking a new recipe –

You may like to cook an Indian curry, or a new Italian pasta dish or even something traditional like a lamb roast, get in the kitchen and start experimenting!

  • 28: Go to an ice cream parlor –

Going to an ice-cream parlor is a great fun activity to do with your kids.
